Inward investment initiatives

City Fringe Partnership

The City Fringe Partnership was set up with the aim of bridging the wealth gap between the square mile and the area to the north and east (the City Fringe), which contains some of the UK’s most deprived areas.

Established in 1996, it works in partnership with the City of London Corporation and the London Boroughs of Camden, Islington, Hackney and Tower Hamlets as well as the London Development Agency.

Its principal aims are to encourage small and medium-sized business growth and to develop employment opportunities in specific strategic industries located within the City Fringe area. Through its "City Growth" strategy the partnership is investing millions of pounds in these key sectors – notably print & publishing, jewellery, health & social care, hospitality & catering, fashion, and furniture & product design.

It works with businesses to define investment plans, with the aim of ensuring that local people benefit from that investment. To date it has secured £6 million of funding for the jewellery, print & publishing, health & social care and furniture & fashion sectors.

Leaside

On the eastern fringe of Tower Hamlets with the River Lea as its boundary, Leaside Regeneration offers some of the greatest business opportunities available in London.

The area has affordable development opportunities and vacant buildings to meet most business needs. There is ample choice for businesses that want to relocate or expand their base in a strategic location.

The Leaside Regeneration Company is pumping new life into one of the most exciting, up-and-coming areas in London, with more than seven million pounds worth of government and European funding and more than 46.5 hectares of potential land for development.

With key partners such as English Partnerships, Leaside has embarked upon a programme of practical and achievable action for lasting regeneration.

Leaside is already home to around 800 businesses and provides an ideal location for companies who wish to serve the City of London and Canary Wharf. It attracts both these business districts and those in the distribution and retail industries that want easy access to the national motorway system.

Thames Gateway

After centuries of the dominance of west London, it is fast being acknowledged that the area immediately east of London in both north and south of the river - is strategically and economically the most advantageous part of the capital for new investment.

London City Airport, Stratford International rail station, and significant access to the river makes east London one of the most attractive areas for business development in the capital.
The biggest appeal, however, is the availability of development land. The area has over 2,000 hectares of development land with over 40 sites of more than five hectares. The majority of these sites are zoned for employment uses - so, while there is an emphasis on high-quality development, planning issues are likely to be less obstructive than in other parts of London and the UK.

The Thames Gateway London Partnership works to exploit these advantages. The partnership is the largest urban regeneration initiative in Europe. It is made up of 13 local authorities, two training and enterprise councils, the universities of East London and Greenwich and the London Development Agency.

Its far-reaching remit includes skills development, environmental and transportation improvements, the European dimension, community safety and community involvement.

The Thames Gateway London area is home to more than two million people and some of the UK's most important companies. With London Docklands at the heart of the area, Thames Gateway London also offers one of London's top three office locations.

Government support for the region has been translated into significant grant funding via the Single Regeneration Budget, Regional Selective Assistance and English Partnerships. The partnership has been established to assist the improvement of the Thames Gateway London economy.

Whether you are looking to invest in the area or have already chosen to locate here, the Thames Gateway team will be delighted to respond to your inquiries.
