Help for carers

Caring for vulnerable people is an essential part of the fabric of our society. Without carers, the statutory authorities would not be able to cope with the level of demand for health care and social services.

All carers, whether young or old, have the right to recognition, respect and support. It is estimated that there are about 30,000 carers within Tower Hamlets.

A carer is someone who provides care in a personal rather than a professional capacity. That may be for a partner, spouse, relative, friend or neighbour who needs help because of illness, infirmity or disability.

Often carers are under a great deal of pressure and have little time to take care of their own needs while they care for someone else. Tower Hamlets Social Services is committed to improving services for carers by working in partnership with the Health Authority, health trusts, the primary care groups and the voluntary sector.

Eight areas which carers themselves have identified as needing support are:

  • full information
  • recognition of their own health and well-being
  • a life of their own - quality services for the carer and the person for whom they care
  • time off
  • emotional support
  • training and support to care
  • financial security
  • a voice.

Respite care is one of the main services offered by Tower Hamlets to give carers a break from their responsibilities. They may need time to take care of their own health, a day off to go to the doctors, a holiday, further education, or just a break to enjoy themselves.

In Tower Hamlets there are voluntary organisations that provide support for carers. These groups offer carers the chance to acquire information and share experiences and concerns.
