Getting married – Introduction

If you wish to marry in England or Wales, you may do so either by a civil or religious ceremony. A civil ceremony can take place in a register office or other premises approved by the local authority for marriages – for example, hotels and stately homes.

A religious ceremony can take place at a church or chapel of the Church of England or church or any other place of worship which has been formally registered by the Registrar General for Marriages.

Tower Hamlets Register Office is responsible for taking notice of intended marriages which will take place between couples living in the borough. We are also responsible for performing and registering all civil marriages taking place in the borough and for registering marriages in churches other than the Church of England.
