Drainage

The council will investigate any complaints relating to drainage and sewerage, determine the nature of the problem, and decide who is responsible for any further action.

The majority of drains in Tower Hamlets constructed after 1937 are likely to be private drainage, so repair and maintenance is the responsibility of the owner of the property.

If the drain is a public sewer, Thames Water Authority is responsible for its repair and maintenance and so they will investigate the problem.

If you are affected by a defect in a drain which is not your responsibility, the council's environmental health department will identify the owner of the property and ask them to carry out an investigation and repair any problem.

To report drainage problems, contact the environmental health department between 9am and 5pm during the working day.
