Housing Choice
The council set up Housing Choice as a way of bringing much-needed investment for housing. It gave tenants on an estate by estate basis the opportunity to transfer to a registered social landlord, which is then able to invest in repairs and provide a level of service, tailored to residents’ needs.
Why did Tower Hamlets launch Housing Choice?
For reasons beyond our control, we do not have the money needed to repair and maintain council homes. Before we launched Housing Choice, our business plan showed that the difference between the money we need to spend to bring homes up to a decent standard and the money we can get from rents and the government was £436 million.
Stock transfer is one of three options set up by the government to channel extra funding into council housing. The other two options are the Public Finance Initiative and ALMO, or Arms Length Management Organisation.
