Learning Communities Development Project

Background:

The Learning Communities Development Project is a partnership between Tower Hamlets Lifelong Learning Service and Tower Hamlets College. The project aims to work with Community/Voluntary Organisations, Schools, Sure Starts and others to train local people to become Volunteer Learning Ambassadors to promote foundation level learning.

The Learning Communities Development Project also contributes towards the Poplar Testbed Learning Communities Pilot, which is feeding into a national strategy to improve adult literacy, language and numeracy skills at a local level – Skills for Life.

Volunteer Learning Ambassadors – Who are they? What do they do?

Volunteer Learning Ambassadors are local people (18+), who love learning and want to spread the word to motivate new learners, particularly those without level 2 (GCSE equivalent) qualifications to access learning. Their role is to support people to access adult literacy, language and numeracy, basic ICT or family learning courses.

Volunteer Learning Ambassadors provide information about existing learning provision and work to support new learners to progress. They also support Learning Ladder drop-in sessions at Idea Stores.
